Backyard Updates: The Garden

We moved into our house 4.5 years ago. In that time, we have done absolutely zero updates to the backyard. Truthfully, we didn’t spend much time back there so we focused our efforts on the spaces on the inside where we spend our most time. But now that we have kids, we see ourselves spending a ton of time outside so we want to transform our backyard into a homey place to hang out and enjoy our time together.

We moved into a builder home where the backyard was a completely blank slate. The only thing back there, was a 3×3 concrete slab with a small awning that doesn’t keep you dry during a storm.

Up until a week ago, this was the state of our backyard since the day we moved in (this photo was taken during our walk through in 2010)…

Our backyard update started about a week ago when 3 things came together all within a matter of days:

1) A friend offered to give us a raised garden bed she’s no longer using, along with a few extra herbs and veggies she had after hearing that I wanted to start a garden.
2) Aaron’s uncle said Easter weekend would be a great time to install the deck we’ve been planning on having built since December.
3) My dad invited me to Home Depot to buy us a few pavers to start a small patio that would extend out to the edge of the deck. That trip turned into buying nearly 100 pavers! The next day he showed up with the tools to help us get started.

The first part of our backyard update has been the garden. Since it’s spring, I wanted to go ahead and get the garden started since it’s the right season to start growing. Plus, the weather has been so gorgeous before the sweltering summer heat and humidity hits us.

We realized that for everything we wanted to grow, we might would need more than just the one raised bed that my friend gave us. So we bought concrete blocks to make a raised cinderblock garden as well.

Instead of tilling, we Aaron trimmed the grass down to the dirt with a weed eater. Then we raked away the grass runners and tilled the soil by hand with a rake. The dirt in our backyard is practically clay so it was a major workout!

After the grass was cleared we laid down cardboard to prevent weeds and critters from getting our veggies. Then filled with gardens soil and planted our loot. We’re growing tomatoes, zucchini, squash, purple onions, white onions, garlic, and different herbs. In the back bed, we’ve got strawberries, blueberries, and we’re going to add in blackberries and raspberries as well.

In the mornings, Cason comes outside with me and “helps” to water everything. Mostly he just tries to eat the dirt and pick the leaves off all the plants.

And this is what happens when you miss putting sun lotion on ONE tiny spot…8 hours of yard work and your skin is blistered. #wearsunscreen #doublecoat

I know a few basic gardening rules but other than that, I’m learning as I go. I’m really enjoying reading and figuring it out. It’s my first year so I tried to start small and keep some low expectations. But I’m really hoping that everything grows big and strong! And every year, I’ll keep learning more and more so every year will get better and better!

Up next in our backyard updates…the paver patio, fire pit, and our new deck. Stay tuned…
